Smug. I must admit, I was smug. Once upon a not-too-long-ago, I thought I would try writing haiku on for size. These short nature poems I first learned back in grade school would be an easy way to get ‘back into writing’. If I found some success with it, maybe I ought to pay a bit more attention to the writer in me.
Two things happened almost right away. I found some success, and, just as quickly, I realized I had no idea what I was doing. Now, I knew haiku weren’t the seventeen syllable poems of grade school, but I had little idea beyond ‘short’ and ‘nature’ and ‘moment’ and maybe ‘Zen’ what went into the little literary gems that have been sparkling for centuries and centuries. Thanks to this thing we call the Internet, the worldwide craze of English language haiku and, most of all, the kindness of strangers, I was able to start learning and begin a practice of trying to write haiku.
This section of the website serves to collect some of what I have learned along the way. I’ll continue to develop it as I go, make it more of a step by step path. At the moment, it is an effort to share with others some resources and to also collect them in one place for my own minding.
